EAST MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC/KCRG) – Deere and Co. laid off 510 employees in the Quad-Cities Friday. The layoffs affect 280 at Harvester Works, 13% of work force, and 230 at Davenport Works, 17% of work force. A Deere spokeswoman said, “These changes are being made due to reduced demand for the products produced at these facilities. As stated in our second quarter earnings call, industry sales are expected to further decline in the back half of FY2024. To better position Deere to meet future demand, we continue to take proactive steps to reduce production and inventory.” Deere told TV6 Investigates that employees would receive temporary health insurance and other severance payments.

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – On Friday, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced a settlement with several companies regarding compliance with Iowa’s One Call law. The One Call law requires anyone who digs, excavates, or trenches privately or commercially to first contact the Iowa One Call center to locate and avoid damaging underground utilities. Failure to do so can cause injuries, create delays, and increase project costs. In May 2021, then-Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller sent warning letters to MidAmerican, Mediacom, and CenturyLink, saying that they had failed to address their problems in untimely and inaccurate locating of their underground facilities. According to Bird’s Office, the state continued to receive complaints and conducted an investigation. Bird says the companies were “receptive, engaged, and proactive through the State’s investigation,” providing information and data throughout. Her office says that while the investigation discovered significant violations of the One Call law, “all three companies have also made drastic improvements in their locating and marking performance and compliance.” Each company will have to pay $50,000 in civil penalties by August 1, 2024.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The city of Cedar Rapids says from May 21 to June 21 of this year, it’s seen more than $5,000 in damage from vandalism to local parks. That damage has taken more than 50 staff hours to repair, and the city says park restrooms may occasionally be closed while repairs continue. Now, the city is asking people to keep an eye out while visiting parks and report damage through MyCR at the city’s website.
