The four instructors from Cornell College who were stabbed at a park in China are out of the hospital. The stabbing happened on Monday, June 10 in China while they visited a public park in Northeast China. They were overseas as part of a teaching partnership with Beihua University. The college’s president says, “All four instructors involved in the incident in China have been reunited with family members, or have continued with their previously scheduled summer travel plans.” A suspect is being held in China in connection with the stabbings.

A Cedar Rapids contractor has been sentenced to 4 years in prison for scamming people after the derecho. Scott Adkins admitted he created a business two months after the storms to fix damaged homes. But       instead of completing the projects, he stole more than $190,000 in down payments from almost two dozen victims. As part of the sentence, he was also ordered to pay back the money to the victims.

The Iowa Attorney General’s office announced the launch of a new cold case unit. It will be made up of three full-time investigators and one prosecutor. They will work with law enforcement agencies across Iowa to help solve more than 400 unsolved murder and missing persons cases in the state. Attorney General Brenna Bird says the new unit will bring fresh eyes to Iowa’s cold cases and dedicate a team to detect new leads.

In Iowa City, firefighters say 13 dogs and two birds were found dead inside a home that was found to have high levels of carbon monoxide. MidAmerican Energy alerted crews to the home on Bancroft Drive Monday night. Investigators say there had been a fire inside, but it self-extinguished from a lack of oxygen. However, high levels of carbon monoxide were found inside. First responders saved one dog. Two people who live there were not hurt. There’s no word on what caused the fire.

Marion police are creating a new, safe zone for child custody exchanges. The exchange spot in the police department’s front parking lot is for visitors to use any time of the day. It’s made of up two marked parking spots and will be monitored by surveillance cameras. The department says these zones can also be used for people making e-commerce transactions.
