The Iowa Board of Regents approved a measure to increase tuition for students at state universities in Iowa. For in-state students, tuition will increase 3 percent at both the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. University of Northern Iowa students will see a 2 percent increase. Tuition will also increase for non-resident students at all three schools. The board heard from several students about the tuition increase. One student leader at the University of Iowa told the story of a first-generation student who had to rely solely on student loans.

 

Officials say one man is dead after drowning at Lake Macbride. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department confirmed an adult male’s body was recovered from the lake yesterday afternoon. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family.

 

Cedar Rapids Public Works is shutting down the Second Avenue bridge downtown next week for the start of floodgate construction to offer protection along the Cedar River. Starting Monday, the bridge will close to traffic. The city expects it to be closed for six months. The bridge will still be accessible to pedestrians, just not vehicles until the floodgate is complete.

 

Dubuque police say a man who took his own life as they arrived to arrest him was a teacher accused of the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old student. Police say Thomas Jefferson Middle School teacher Trent Paschal had a sexual relationship with the underage student. Police say they were serving a warrant for his arrest at his apartment Wednesday when officers heard a gunshot and found him dead. Dubuque Schools says Paschal taught health at the middle school and also coached middle school basketball, middle school track, and freshman football.

 

Meskwaki’s police chief says he believes investigators are getting close to solving the Rita Papakee case. It comes after they spent five days searching a new, potential area of interest in the case of the missing Meskwaki woman. Rita Papakee vanished 9 years ago. She was last seen leaving the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel. Meskwaki Nation Police Department Chief Jeff Bunn says investigators sent away some items of interest found in this area. He said he is confident that investigators will be able to solve the case and he feels like they are getting close.
