Timing Is Interesting

The President is scheduled to sign an executive order today to place limits on the southern border. There are a number of things that are curious at best about this, and they are all political.

First, what changed after three and a half years? This president claimed he could not issue such an order, and that it was Congress’s job. Never mind that he signed an executive order rescinding his predecessor’s executive order on the topic. Apparently they either found a new legal theory to allow it…or they checked poll numbers.

Second, this only allows rejection of those crossing the border after certain numbers are hit. It’s like saying we’re going to stop smash-and-grab looting of a store, but only after a certain amount has been stolen. This is in no way real help on the issue, but it does allow a photo op with smiling members of Congress and the claim that something has been done. Note, however, that representatives in close races this November are not going to be there, to avoid the issue being used against them in the election. That alone shows you how proud they are of it.

Third, the timing is interesting. The President is going to sign an executive order on border security in an election year on the same day opening arguments are held in the trial of his son in a federal court in Delaware on gun charges. Which do you suppose will get the bigger headlines in the national news? Well, you say, he had to do it before leaving for the D-Day commemoration. My response is that they’ve been talking about this order, floating trial balloons on it, for weeks. So why today as opposed to last week, or next week?

Hopefully the public, especially voters, will see through the sham. As if there are any undecided voters out there, even five months from the election.
