DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The Dubuque man charged in the death of his mother is competent to stand trial, a district court judge ruled. Prosecutors charged Tyler Dazey with first-degree murder after his mother was found dead in her home with multiple lacerations to her head, face, and neck. The family dog was also found dead with a significant head injury. Dazey had told police that his mother had been practicing witchcraft. A previous evaluation found Dazey not competent to stand trial in February, but the judge ordered him to undergo further evaluation by the state. In court documents filed this week, a judge reviewed both reports and found Dazey competent to stand trial. The trial will be held, starting at 9:30 a.m. on July 9.
