Iowa joined 20 states in a lawsuit against the Biden administration over its recent changes to Title IX. Title IX bans sex discrimination in education programs which receive federal funding. The Biden Administration added a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Attorney General Brenna Bird says that robs young women of the opportunity to safely compete and succeed in the sports they love. Governor Kim Reynolds says the new rules are outrageous and marginalize girls and women.

The family of a northwest Iowa trucker found dead five months after he disappeared is now ordering a second autopsy. David Schultz was reported missing in November after he left his home in Sac County before picking up a load of pigs from a hog confinement. A farmer found his body in a field in April. His body was about a mile from where his truck was abandoned. A preliminary autopsy showed no signs of trauma or serious injury. Schultz’s family told the Sioux City Journal they want an autopsy to rule out foul play.

Cleanup is underway across Iowa after storms hit the region overnight. This includes a tornado which hit just outside of Minden in western Iowa. A separate tornado hit the area last month, killing one person. Before Monday night’s storm, crews were working to restore water to the community due to last month’s tornado. Minden Fire and Rescue says there are no reports of anyone injured.

Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new law meant to boost literacy rates for Iowa children. It requires schools to teach a specific reading method called the science of reading. The bill also requires developing individual plans for students not at grade level. Last year, more than 30 percent of Iowa’s 3rd and 11th graders weren’t reading at their grade level.

Iowa City will replace the City Park Pool. The pool has been operating for 70 years. The city received more than 1,000 completed surveys from residents for the design of a new pool that could cost up to $19 million. City Park pool will be open this summer for its last season of operations. The new pool will open in spring of 2026.
