CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Linn County jury has found Shane Teslik guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the 2023 stabbing death of Devonna Walker in Cedar Rapids. Teslik’s fiancée, Jessica Chavez, had been arguing with Walker outside of their apartment on North Towne Court on January 2nd, 2023 when Teslik called Walker, who was black, a racial slur. Video of the incident captured Walker charging at Chavez and Teslik. Teslik, who was standing in the doorway of the apartment, then stabbed Walker with a kitchen knife. Video shows Walker stumbling before collapsing to the ground. An autopsy determined Walker had died from a stab wound. During Teslik’s trial, his attorneys argued that Teslik was defending himself, Chavez, and his daughter who was standing behind him in the doorway at the time of the stabbing. Prosecutors argued that Teslik admitted he was not afraid of Walker and that he called Walker the “n word” to provoke her. Teslik was also found guilty of disorderly conduct. Sentencing is set for June 7th.
