Waterloo police say one man is dead after an officer-involved shooting. A Coralville man accused of sexually abusing a minor who went to his at-home daycare was found not guilty of three counts of second degree sexual abuse. Jeffrey Dodds was arrested in 2022 after the accusations were made by the child, who also took the stand in the trial. Dodds co-owned Simple Abundance Child Care in Coralville with his wife at the time. The jury found him not guilty of all charges.

An 18-year-old Marion man was convicted by a jury after the shooting death of a 17-year-old last May during a fight in the 3500 block of Oakland Road Northeast. Keyun McGowan was found guilty of shooting Cristian Upah. McGowan will be sentenced May 24. Because he was a minor at the time of the shooting, he does not face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Instead, his sentence is at the discretion of the judge, who can sentence him to anything besides life in prison without parole.

A couple with a unique link to the University of Iowa’s Carver Medical School is helping some of its students avoid big debts when they graduate. Karen Simmonds and Mark Gilbert have made a $3 million commitment to fund 27 full ride scholarships for medical students at Iowa for the next ten years. The couple first met when Karen’s late husband was receiving treatment for leukemia and Mark, an Iowa graduate, was one of Karen’s husband’s doctors. Carver’s scholarship committee will select the recipients. The new scholarships will be available in the fall.

Eastern Iowa can start getting ready for a little chaos. The Chaos–a new professional arena football team–is coming to Coralville. The team is set to host a news conference with more details later this week. Its website shows the team will be joining the American Indoor Football league. That’s the same league as the Cedar Rapids Riverkings. The Chaos football team is expected to hit the field in 2025.
