Linn County Supervisors voted to send a letter requesting funds for a federal summer food assistance program for students. It’s money the state said it didn’t want. Last December, Governor Reynolds announced that the state would opt out of the summertime food assistance program for students saying the program doesn’t provide long term solutions for families, nor does it promote nutrition when childhood obesity is considered an epidemic. Supervisors say if the request is denied, the county will continue to work with local nonprofits to ensure children in the county that rely on those meals, are fed.

The Waukon man arrested in the death of his wife had a history of domestic assault allegations. Brandon Kasemeier faces the charge of murder in the first degree in connection to the death of his wife Jami. Court documents do show that Brandon Kasemeier was charged with domestic abuse, but that case was dismissed in 2018. Kasemeier was arrested in Colorado after Jami Kasemeier’s body was found inside their home on Monday.

Iowa state lawmakers are once again considering a new law businesses in the state have resisted for years. Senate File 108 bans employers from hiring undocumented workers and mandates they use the federal E-Verify system, which checks whether or not someone is eligible to work in the US. Business leaders say they’re concerned because E-Verify occasionally marks people, mostly teenage employees as ineligible. So far, 25 out of the 34 Republican state senators have signed on to the bill.

The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls is set to start its new Bachelor of Nursing program next semester. UNI received approval for the program from the Iowa Board of Regents in 2022. When the six-semester program starts in the fall, there will be 24 students. With high demands for health care across the state and around the country, both nursing faculty in the program and area hospitals say it will hopefully make a positive impact.

A piece of RAGBRAI history is up for auction. The bike and jersey of RAGBRAI’s co-founder, Donald Kaul, is being auctioned off. ’The Dream Team’ is auctioning the pieces off. It’s a nonprofit encouraging kids to get into biking. The items will be at the Bike Expo in the Iowa Events Center on Saturday night at the RAGBRAI 2024 route announcement party.
