Free Food

We’ve talked before about how free food and drink is a major part of presidential candidates’ appeal these days, to hook you in to attending their events.

If you really worked it right, though, you could go from now until the day of the Iowa Caucus and have at least one free meal per day…and not travel far from home to find it.

For example, lunch was with Casey DeSantis yesterday at a restaurant in downtown Waverly. Tonight, dinner with Vivek Ramaswamy at a Waterloo Bosnian-American restaurant. Ron DeSantis might be providing dinner Friday night in Cedar Falls, after stopping by our studios…can’t tell for sure from the news release, but it’s being held at a place where people meet and eat.

And I’m sure I’m forgetting others…those were the first few that came to mind within a short drive—or even within walking distance—of my radio studio.

Of course, there’s the down side…you have to listen to a candidate’s or surrogate’s pitch. As I’ve said before, it’s like other sales-driven events: the meal may be free, but you have to listen to the sales pitch for reverse mortgages or retirement homes.

Not only does free food help draw people in…it helps keep them quiet and distracted when the candidate is 10, 15, 30 minutes late—or more.

And of course, it’s only going to get more congested as the home stretch toward the January 15 caucuses hits full steam.

It’s your chance to get out and hear from these folks one more time. It’s our responsibility as Iowans.

But watch your diet along the way.
