Cedar Rapids officials say an inspection in June first noticed structural issues at the Westhill Village Apartments that are now forcing some residents to find a new place to live. Residents got a notice last Friday saying they have to move out in 30 days because the building is unsafe. In December, an engineering firm flagged more concerns, prompting the notices.

Bruce Teague has been unanimously re-elected as Iowa City mayor by his fellow council members. Teague was first elected to the city council in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022. He’s served in his mayoral role since 2020. Mazahir Salih was elected as Mayor Pro Tem.

One man is dead and a woman is hurt after a shooting in rural Benton County. Officials say an 89-year-old man was found dead at a home two miles south of Vinton Friday, and a 59-year-old woman was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle after being shot. Deputies say the investigation is ongoing, and the names of those involved are not being released yet.

A trial date is now set for the man accused of shooting and killing a DoorDash driver during a shootout in Cedar Rapids. Prosecutors charged Cameron Leonard with several counts including first degree murder, going armed with intent and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. He’s pleaded not guilty. Court documents show his trial is now set for May 28. Leonard is accused of killing Myron Snyder. This happened on October last year outside an apartment on Sherman Street Northeast.

Demolition is officially underway for Cedar Rapids’ new Alliant Light Line, a pedestrian and bike bridge that will connect the NewBo and Czech Village neighborhoods. The new bridge will replace the historic Rock Island Railroad Bridge, which the 2008 floods damaged. This bridge will connect to existing trails–the American Discovery Trail and the trails at Mount Trashmore. Connect CR Treasurer Steve Sovern says these developments will better serve the existing population and help grow the city. Groundbreaking for the Light Line is set to start late this year, with completion expected some time in 2025.
