Statistics from the Iowa DOT show that 2023 is on pace to be the deadliest year on Iowa’s roads since 2016. As of Friday, 364 people have been killed in crashes. That’s roughly 10 percent higher than last year. The State Patrol says that a lot of the fatal accidents they see involve drivers speeding… and those not wearing seatbelts. Last year more than half of all people who died in car crashes were not wearing seatbelts. Deputies also say they see a lot of younger drivers speeding and being distracted, but the age of people involved in fatal crashes is wide spread.

The average price of a gallon of as in Iowa has fallen another 2 cents in the last week, according to Gas Buddy. Prices today now sit at $2.82, about 5 cents lower than this time last month and a year ago. Nationally, the average cost of a gallon of gas is up nearly 3 cents this week and down about 14 cents from a month ago. An expert says gas prices inched higher because of attacks in the Middle East on ships in the Red Sea.

A fire destroyed a 120 year old former school building in Floyd County. Fire investigators still don’t know what caused the fire Friday night in on Second Avenue Northwest in Rockford. Emergency management says several agencies responded, including every fire department in Floyd County. No one was hurt. Emergency management says it appears the school was first built in 1900. The building replaced another school built in 1873. A fire destroyed that school in 1899.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is looking to identify the person caught on security cameras stealing donated cans from a Lockridge fire and rescue station. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office or the fire station.

The warm weather is keeping people off the slopes. Chestnut Mountain is closed because of the warm, wet weather. They posted on Facebook they’ll keep everyone posted on re-opening. The operators at Sundown Mountain in Dubuque says it will be closed through at least Thursday because of the weather. They say they plan to decide soon whether they will be open this weekend.
