From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:

A trial date is now set for the third person charged with murder in the death of Chris Bagley in Linn County. Prosecutors say Andrew Shaw orchestrated Bagley’s murder in 2018. Prosecutors say Shaw paid hitmen in drugs and money to have Bagley killed. He is already serving an eight-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to gun and drug-related charges. Court documents show his trial is now set for January 23.

Special meetings are planned for next week to approve plans for a new joint 911 communications center in Dubuque before the end of the year. The plan includes having a 911 center for both the county and the city. The county board of supervisors, the Dubuque City Council and the 911 Service Board all need to approve the agreement by December 31, if it’s going to move forward.

A University of Iowa study, funded by NASA, suggests wildfires are taking a toll on the air quality and wildfire smoke has led to thousands of premature deaths. Dr. Jun Wang with the University of Iowa says these wildfires cause “Black Carbon” particles to be circulated in the air. These particles are hard to remove from the lungs and can eventually lead to heart disease. The study finds nearly 600 more people are dying prematurely every year from the impacts of wildfire smoke.

The Iowa Workforce Development’s WARN website indicates 67 workers at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center are being laid off. The layoffs include 11 employees in Fort Madison, and 56 in West Burlington. The layoffs take effect on February 23.

The Brucemore historic site in Cedar Rapids is almost finished with its multi-year preservation project on the exterior of the 1886 mansion. Crews are in the final process of reinstalling original metal roof crests that were originally removed in 2019, and the reinstallation was delayed because of derecho damage in 2020. They say original material was reused as much as possible and 3-D technology allowed them to create exact replicas.
