From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
The new President at Kirkwood Community College says COVID continues to be a challenge for students and educators. Kristie Fisher formally started her presidency Monday, becoming the school’s sixth president following the retirement of Lori Sundberg. President Fisher says the pandemic is still having an impact on students entering the community college system. Fisher also says Kirkwood needs to improve and expand on the partnerships it has throughout its seven-county service area.
Hawkeye Football Coach Kirk Ferentz has little to say just hours after the University of Iowa announced his son, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, would not be with the team after this season. Ferentz responded to questions from the media saying he won’t let the decision become a distraction for the team. Though players weren’t available at the weekly media conference, interim director of athletics Beth Goetz was. She said the fact that Kirk Ferentz is Brian Ferentz’s father, and the fact that she is the interim AD and not the University’s athletic director, did not affect her decision. The Hawkeyes face Northwestern at Wrigley Field this Saturday.
A new scam has been spotted in states across the country, and now it’s popping up in Eastern Iowa. People have been seen around Cedar Rapids holding signs featuring a picture of a young boy who allegedly died and asking for money for his funeral. It’s a scam, the same seen in other states, and features the picture of a 12-year-old boy who is a chess player from Peru. Willis Dady Homeless Services in Cedar Rapids says while many panhandlers in the area claim to be homeless, most of them are not. Director Denine Rushing says the agency tells individuals not to approach people on the streets who are asking for money.
Iowa City Police are warning people about a scam involving people posing as law enforcement. Police say they’ve received several reports of someone posing as a police officer contacting them and demanding payment for an outstanding warrant. Police remind you law enforcement agency will not contact someone directly and demand money. They say if you receive a phone call like this, please hang up immediately.
