Iowa Politics with Jeff Stein — Mon. Oct. 23, 2023

Four More Years

Better get used to saying “President Kamela Harris”…that’s because she’s apparently going to still be the running mate of current President Joe Biden in the 2024 campaign…and one way or another, the smart money would say if they win in 2024, she’ll be president before the 2028 election.

But what about all the poor polling? The unchecked inflation? The tragically bad foreign policy moves?

Sure, to you it seems like a slam dunk for a Republican win in 13 months. But admit it…you were probably surprised Biden and Harris are in their jobs right now.And if you are one of those who says the 2020 election was not fair, or stolen…or even if you only still have questions about it all…tell me what has been done since that 2020 election to address the concerns you had about fairness? If you think the election was rigged, what has been done to make sure the next one was fair?

Again, I’m not taking a side on the issue, but simply reminding those who think they were cheated three years ago that nothing of substance has changed to address the concerns…meaning either that there was nothing to fix systemically after 2020, so the result in 2024 could easily be the same…or that there was massive fraud with nothing done to fix it, so the result in 2024 would be the same.

No, I don’t believe Joe Biden is physically or mentally fit to be president…he’s far different now than when I covered his campaign in Iowa more than 15 years ago, and it’s beyond simply the aging process. But anyone who is sitting back and presuming that the rest of the voting public sees things the same way they do and a GOP landslide is ahead in 2024…is setting themselves up for disappointment.

To be clear, Iowa runs its elections very well…fairness and accuracy are not issues here. But there may be issues elsewhere that remain unaddressed.

“How can anyone vote for Biden and Harris?” you might ask. Their supporters may say the same about your preferred candidate, and even say it with the same conviction.

For that matter, Democrats who think a Trump candidacy will be a huge gift to Democrats are similarly living in a fairy tale, far from reality.

That’s the problem with such a starkly divided electorate. None of us can imagine the other side winning. But we’d better start…and then get involved—peacefully and lawfully—from that point on.
