From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:
The demolition of Cedar Rapids’ Harrison Elementary will go forward. The board voted in April to demolish the school and build a new one in its place. But a preservationist group gathered enough signatures to call for a special meeting last night for a last-ditch to re-consider the issue. The Board heard from those who oppose the demolition but did not vote to change to reverse course.
Iowa City police say they’ve arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman earlier this month in the 500 block of East College Street. Police say DNA evidence was a match for Anthony Cotner, Jr. of Cedar Rapids. They say surveillance video in the area of the assault also showed someone matching a description of the suspect. Police say the man asked the woman to join him inside a nearby bar. He now faces second-degree sexual abuse charges.
A new Grinnell College national poll found it’s a dead heat between President Joe Biden and top Republican contender former President Donald Trump. While tied both at 40 percent, 18 percent of people said they would vote for someone else. The poll asked if support for an issue would make them more or less likely to vote for someone. 47% say they are less likely to favor candidates advocating a national abortion ban, 46% are less likely to vote for those backing a ban on gender-affirming medical treatment for minors, but 42% are more likely to vote for candidates on the side of forgiving student loans and 41% are more likely to support continued military aid to Ukraine. There’s also strong bi-partisan support for term limits in Congress and the Supreme Court.
Students at Coralville Central Elementary School got a surprise when Iowa women’s basketball guard Gabbie Marshall and Iowa mascot Herky showed up at their assembly. Their visit is part of a donation Casey’s is making to the school to upgrade its soccer goals and field. The $10,000 donation is also going toward installing sensory equipment indoors and outdoors.
