One man is dead in what police are describing as a homicide in the 2000 block of Wiley Boulevard SW in Cedar Rapids. Police tape cordoned off part of the parking lot of a strip mall just south of the post office. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday. A single adult male was found dead. Police say the investigation is on-going right now.
The Marion Independent School District says one of its schools will remain closed today because of water damage from yesterday’s storms. Superintendent Janelle Brouwer says an older part of the Francis Marion Intermediate School building collapsed and in turn sent water into classrooms. This building has third and fourth grade classrooms. The district will have a better time frame of when the building will open next week.
Iowa City police are investigating a report of sexual assault. It happened just after 2 o’clock on Saturday morning. The victim told police a man attacked while the victim was walking near the alley in the 200 block of South Van Buren Street. Anyone with information about the assault should call Iowa City police.
The Marengo plant that exploded last December was not up to electrical code requirements and had several safety hazards. More than 10 people were hurt when the C6-Zero plant exploded. The Environmental Protection Agency conducted an inspection the previous April. It found the plant failed to design a safe facility. The EPA has not yet issued a fine or other penalty for these offenses. But the report labeled the facility a high risk, and said it failed to minimize the consequences of an accident.
The Iowa women’s basketball team is aiming to break a record when they take the court on Sunday in their “Crossover at Kinnick”. With more than 52,000 tickets sold, the Hawkeyes know Sunday will be historic. The forecast for Iowa’s game against DePaul features temperatures in the 50’s with gusty winds of up to 20-30 miles per hour. Iowa Senior Guard Caitlin Clark says she’s preparing for the strong winds and is looking forward to the crowd noise from the moment the team runs out of the tunnel at Kinnick.
