Not So Social Media

One of the worse named things of the past few decades is the thing we call “social media”—because it is anything but social. Now comes another survey, this one from bonusfinder.com, identifying the most commonly committed social media sins…and which states are most prone to commit them. More than 3,000 Americans were surveyed in the study.

Tops on the list of sins was having an argument with someone on social media…44.5 percent of folks admitted to that. Not far behind was publishing something while the person was angry or hurt, that the person later regretted—36.7 percent say they’ve done that. Next comes one I frankly thought would be higher…only 31.6 percent have published something while they were intoxicated, that they later regretted.

A few other notes from the top 10 list…coming in at number 8, 27.6 percent of folks admit publishing revealing images or videos of themselves…while 26.8 percent admit to sending sexually provocative or nude images. I guess that goes along with the 30.2 percent who say they have sent sexually provocative written messages.

So, where is all this bad behavior coming from? Far and away the worst offenders are from the state of New York, with 62.1 percent of New Yorkers on social media committing bad behavior. Washington state is in the number 2 spot, but far behind relatively speaking with only 46.3 percent of folks being bad…barely ahead of Illinois, number 3 on the top 10 bad list, with 44 percent of users being bad.

You’ll be glad to know Iowa was not even in the top 10.

Obviously bad behavior is in the eye of the beholder…but I have to wonder, if that many people admitted to being bad…how many actually were?
