BUCHANAN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – One person was killed in a fiery crash on I-380 in Buchanan County on Labor Day morning. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says the vehicle went off the road on I-380 at 330th Street at the Brandon exit just around 6:25 a.m. Monday and “burst into flames.” The crash scene blocked 330th Street underneath the I-380 overpass for several hours while the ramps on and off I-380 are still open. Small pops and explosions from the burning vehicle can be heard. The name of the driver and any potential cause of the crash have not been released as the investigation continues.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The task of renaming a city park has prompted a review of policies after Dubuque’s City Council rejected the recommendation of its Parks and Recreation Commission. The discussion for Tuesday’s city council meeting centers on the renaming of Pyatigorsk Park in Dubuque, which had been named for Dubuque’s Russian Sister City. The city sought to change its name after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After a lengthy review process, the Dubuque Parks and Rec Advisory Commission recommended the name “Jaycees Park”. However, the City Council rejected that name and opted instead for “Sister City Park”. In a letter to the city council, the chair of the Park and Recreation Commission expressed confusion at the decision “even though we spent many commission meeting hours, listened to many passionate people and careful consideration”. The letter requests a review of the guidelines and process for future park naming. The city is set to open three mini-parks that would go through the naming process.

CENTER POINT, Iowa (KCRG) – First responders rescued one dog, but a second dog died in a fire at a home in Center Point on Monday. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office said it happened at 121 Main Street at about 6:40 p.m. No people were at the home at the time of the fire. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control quickly, but officials said the home is unlivable due to the damage. The dog that survived was revived by ambulance and fire department crew members. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – On September 4th, Holocaust survivor David Wolnerman of Des Moines passed away. He was 96 years old. David was born in 1927 in Mondrzejow, Poland. He lost most of his immediate and extended family following Nazi occupation in 1939. Beginning at age 13, David spent six years in over 11 concentration camps throughout the war – including both Dachau and Auschwitz – surviving forced labor, a selection by Mengele, typhus, and starvation. In an interview with KCCI-TV, he credited lying about his age with saving his life. On April 29th, 1945, he was liberated from Dachau, by General Eisenhower’s troops. David strongly felt that God pulled him through the hunger, sickness, and inhumanity of the experience. Services will be held Tuesday, September 5 at 11 a.m. in Des Moines. His grandson, Rabbi Daniel Wolnerman, will conduct the service. Interment will be at Jewish Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.
