A judge could hand down his decision this morning in the murder case of Henry Dinkins, the Davenport man accused of kidnapping, assaulting, and killing 10-year old Breasia Terrell. Closing arguments finished yesterday, with the judge saying he would decide Dinkins’ guilt or innocence quickly. Prosecutors say circumstantial evidence links Dinkins to the 2020 murder of the child, who was spending the night at his Davenport home. The defense says there’s no physical proof linking him to her death.
Closing arguments were also given in the trial for the son of Iowa Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery. 17-year old Jack McCaffery was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk who was hit by McCaffrey’s car. Investigators say 45-year old Corey Hite died two weeks later. McCaffery is pleading not guilty and did not appear in court for the hearing.
A Cedar Rapids man convicted for his role in the U.S. Capitol riots is appealing his conviction. A jury convicted Leo Kelly of seven charges in May. He was sentenced to more than two years in prison earlier this month and ordered to pay $7,000 in restitution and fines.
More than a dozen people living at the Welch Apartments in Muscatine are being relocated to hotels. The city says a structural engineer noticed “bulging walls and floors pulling away from the wall” late last week. The owner of the building is now waiting for a report on whether to repair or demolish. Sidewalks and parking spaces next to the Welch Apartments have also been closed. The owner is providing residents with a dining stipend and is working with the city and the residents to find them new places to stay.
MidAmerican Energy says it plans to use a low-flying helicopter for safety inspections across Iowa in the coming weeks. The company says it will inspect about 5,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines and other equipment. Crews will survey lines for damage, wear or vegetation. The helicopters will give inspectors an aerial view to identify possible repairs or upgrades before disrupting service to those areas.
