No Second Fiddle

Donald Trump is ahead in the GOP presidential race according to polls. Far ahead. REALLY far ahead.

Some analysts are calling the rest of the field, including last week’s candidate debate, as the race for vice-president; Trump himself used the phrase.

But not so fast, say some of the candidates…they’re in it to win it, to the point of ruling out serving as Trump’s #2.

The first to throw cold water on the veep speculation was Gov. Ron DeSantis, who early on suggested that he’s nobody’s “number two”. Given the animosity currently shown by Trump…and the constitutional prohibition of two people from a single state serving on the ticket…a Don-and-Ron ticket was never really in the cards.

Now two who made last week’s debate stage say they are not interested in being Trump’s vice-president…last week, Vivek Ramaswamy said he would not accept the job…and now Gov. Doug Burgum is telling interviewers that he also would not accept the nod.

Not sure we can really believe them, since if a president or presidential nominee makes the call, the recipient would be hard pressed to say no. And we don’t expect anyone running for the top spot to admit to having a backup plan in case things don’t work out.

And neither Ramaswamy or Burgum have been Trump-bashers, so declining to serve with Trump doesn’t feel like they have anything against #45.

But it is interesting that this is coming up at this time…and that the answers are what they are.
