What’s a Good Job?

Work is a good thing, regardless of the form it takes. No job is better or worse than another. There’s something satisfying about doing a job well, whether you sit at a keyboard or repair a leaky kitchen faucet.

That’s why I’ve bristled at this Administration’s stance on work and workers…in short, that it’s only a good job if it’s a union job, and that’s not true.

President Biden has boasted that he’s the most pro-union president ever, which is not a bad position to take given how big labor traditionally delivers votes for Democrats. But those numbers are not what they used to be, and unions are now calling out the Administration because those green energy efforts are going to leave lots of American union workers out in the cold.

The UAW president, citing a current fight over automakers and the lesser wages, benefits and working conditions tied to new green-economy jobs, said Biden needs to get “a hell of a lot more vocal” to support them, adding that there “needs to be a just transition” to a green economy.

That transition language has been pooh-poohed by Bidenworld when it’s spoken by those in the middle or the right of the political spectrum.

A senior White House economic advisor says Biden agrees that “we need a just transition to electric vehicles that promotes not just more jobs, but good union jobs.”

Two things there…first, that there are jobs and then there are “good union jobs” with a clear preference toward the latter…which should be of great concern to those of us in right-to-work states such as Iowa. Second, even the unions see that the green future is not connected with reality in terms of time, workforce, or materials.

Let’s see how the Administration walks that tightrope…pandering to the far left greenies, while also holding on to the stalwart union folks…with the next battle to be at an Ohio battery plant and labor negotiations there.
