The Iowa Board of Regents voted to approve the University of Iowa’s $20 million bid to acquire Mercy Iowa City. This comes after Mercy declared bankruptcy. Mercy Iowa City’s total debt stands at $63 million dollars. The University of Iowa says it will not be responsible for that sum. University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson says acquiring Mercy Iowa City will expand their ability to meet health care needs in their own community and across the state.

Testimony continues this morning in the trial of a man accused of driving his pickup into a group of protestors. Video shows David Huston driving his truck into the group of protestors angry about the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn of abortion rights last year. One of the witnesses to testify was Linn County Prosecuting attorney Nick Maybanks. It’s the reason the Black Hawk County Attorney’s office is handling the case.

Dubuque is a step closer to placing 22 more cameras at major intersections and entrances of the city. These cameras would record and track the license plates of vehicles driving. Police would then be able to use this data in criminal investigations to run searches of license plates. City Staff says this technology can help solve crime faster and alert police when a license plate of a vehicle has been reported stolen.

Former President Donald Trump announced he will visit Iowa this weekend to attend the state fair. He’s expected to address voters at the event Saturday. But he will not take part in one of the “fair-side chats” Governor Kim Reynolds will hold with Republican presidential candidates, nor will he participate in the Des Moines Register’s “soapbox” series.

The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital announced the Kid Captains for this year’s Iowa Football Season. The first one is Gracelyn Springer from Alburnett. She battled Ewing Sarcoma, and is in remission from cancer. The group of 12 children was chosen from 271 nominations.
