The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission says there is no evidence that any Iowa or Iowa State games were impacted by athletes gambling. Seven current or former Hawkeye and Cyclone athletes have been charged with records tampering as part of an investigation by the Department of Criminal Investigation. All seven are accused of betting on Iowa and Iowa State sporting events. In a statement, the Racing and Gaming Commission said it’s reviewed available wagering information and has not found anything that would call into question the integrity of events involving Iowa and ISU.
Iowa families who want to save a few bucks on back-to-school clothes will be able to this weekend. The annual sales tax holiday begins today and runs through the end of the day Saturday. Shoppers will not have to pay sales tax on clothing and footwear under $100. All businesses open Friday and Saturday are required to participate.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says it is an “investment” to use COVID-19 relief funds to pay to send more than 100 Iowa National Guard members to the U.S. border with Mexico. Those soldiers just left to help patrol the border in an effort to prevent people from crossing into the U.S. illegally and to stop the flow of illegal drugs. The Governor is defending the use of COVID relief funds to pay for the deployment. Her office points out the funds from the American Rescue Plan come with a lot of flexibility on how states can spend it. She argues the health and safety of Iowans is directly threatened by what happens at the southern border.
Linn County deputies are investigating an explosive device found on a property near southwest of Springville. The sheriff’s office says a deputy found the device just before 11 Thursday morning along Secrist Road, in the area of Cambell Road. Investigators confirmed the device was an “improvised explosive.” It’s unclear how it got there and who made it. The Cedar Rapids Metro Hazardous Device Unit was brought in and removed the explosive from the roadway.
