From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:

An Iowa judge has put a hold on the new abortion measure signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds on Friday. Joseph Seidlin’s ruling comes after Republicans in the legislature fast tracked the bill during a special session last week. It limits the procedure after cardiac activity is detected, typically around the 6-week mark. On Friday, an attorney representing Planned Parenthood and the Emma Goldman Clinic asked the judge to issue an injunction.

Governor Reynolds issued a statement saying, “The abortion industry’s attempt to thwart the will of Iowans and the voices of their elected representatives continues today, but I will fight this all the way to the Iowa Supreme Court where we expect a decision that will finally provide justice for the unborn.”

An Iowa soldier is dead after a medical emergency during basic training. Private First Class Jacob Atchison of Pella was training at Fort Moore in Georgia at the time. His obituary says the 19-year-old started training on May 1. He had hoped to become an Army Ranger and someday join the special forces. The army says an investigation will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

Crews began construction on an expansion to the Buchanan County Health Center. Plans include a new two-story building with more inpatient rooms and expanded infusion services. There will also be a partial demolition of existing facilities on the west side of the campus to allow for renovations and upgrades. The project is set to be complete by October of next year.

The College Community School District is one step closer to adding an aquatic center to its campus. It will run as a YMCA, which means its staff will be on site from around 5 in the morning to 10 at night. Now students will also get the chance to have their own facility for school-related swim team practices and meets. Right now, both the School District and the YMCA of Cedar Rapids are looking into a needs assessment. That will determine what additional amenities–a track, other exercise equipment–might be desired in a facility like this.
