Waiting in the Wings

The issue of Joe Biden’s age and fitness to serve another term has come up with regard to the 2024 presidential election. The latest to raise it is none other than 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The former Secretary of State and U.S. Senator was asked by the Financial Times during an interview about Biden almost falling during public appearances at the recent G7 summit. She deflected it a bit, but then uttered the headline quote: “His age is an issue. And people have every right to consider it.”

Factual, to be sure. But given the fact that she is not able to cut the ribbon on a Hillary Clinton Presidential Library, you have to wonder if there’s a bit more behind the comment.

What if Biden is not able to compete in the 2024 election. Obviously, it depends on what point in the season that might happen. By declaring his candidacy, he’s frozen out most of the supposed top line contenders.

Elevating Kamela Harris seems to be a bad idea; actually, having her still on the ticket with Biden does not inspire much confidence, even among Democrats.

So who could the Democrats turn to in a pinch, someone who has experience running a campaign, someone who has a national following, someone who…oh, that’s right.

Keep in mind, this is not a knock on her. Those who have the drive and desire the office don’t let go of the dream easily. Think Pete Buttigeig doesn’t stand next to Biden and wonder “what if”—or “when”?

We may already be headed to an election rematch…this would be version 2.0 of a different election. And with all due respect, I doubt the voters are any more eager to see a rematch from 2016 than we know they are not looking forward to one from 2020.

For now, though…watch to see if Hillary Clinton’s public appearances ramp up. Then you’ll know.
