Arthur Flowers has been found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Emily Leonard inside his home last year. Flowers was originally charged with first degree murder as prosecutors say he beat her to death in his Cedar Rapids last April. The judge set Flowers’ sentencing for June 9th.
Cedar Rapids Police arrested a second person for a man’s fatal shooting near Kirkwood Community College. 22-year-old Jeremiah Coop is charged with first degree murder and first degree robbery. Investigators say he and Paris Diamond killed Mohamed Tawfik back in early January. Police found Tawfik unresponsive in a vehicle in the 5600 block of Kirkwood Boulevard on January 9. Police say the investigation is ongoing, but more arrests are not expected.
Flooding is expected along the entire Mississippi River in Iowa, with disaster proclamations already approved for ten counties along full 300-mile length of the river.
Dubuque public works crews are preparing to close the city’s entire levee system for just the third time since building it and the riverfront flood wall. The river is over the 23-foot level and is expected to crest at just over 24 feet. The levee there can handle up 30 feet of water — well above the predicted water levels.
The U.S. Small Business Administration will provide low-interest disaster loans for eight people in counties impacted by the March 31st storms and tornadoes. Homeowners, renters, businesses, and most nonprofit organizations in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Linn, Louisa, Muscatine, and Washington counties, whose property was damaged or destroyed by this disaster, will be able to apply through the SBA.
A group of about 100 veterans from Eastern Iowa is back after the latest Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. This is the 46th Honor Flight to military memorials in the nation’s capitol and the Arlington National Cemetery. Among those taking the flight were people who weren’t able to fly out in October when the plane had mechanical difficulties.
