The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the company C6-Zero is in violation of an emergency order. The DNR issued that order days after an explosion and fire at its plant in Marengo last December that injured 9 workers. The DNR cited a number of already missed deadlines, including making the assessment plan, paying for remediation work, and taking too long to provide the DNR with a list of any chemical substance or mixture present at the plant during the explosion.
Today, a jury could start deliberations in the trial of a man accused of killing his girlfriend’s step mother. Tacoa Talley is charged with first degree murder in the death of Jodie Bevans. As it closed its case yesterday, prosecutors showed a video from snapchat, showing Talley and Samantha Bevans–Jodie Bevans’s step daughter–admitting to the killing. Samantha Bevins’ trial is set for this Fall.
Concerns over a rising Mississippi River prompted the closure of two Jackson County Campgrounds. The campgrounds at Spruce Creek Park and South Sabula Lake Park are closed until further notice. The Mississippi River to rise to near flood stage at Bellevue as soon as next week.
Linn County campgrounds are now open. The county opened its parks a little early this year because of the nice weather. People can now camp at Morgan Creek Park, Pinicon Ridge, and Wannatee. The parks take reservations, with some sites available on a first come, first served basis.
The co-founder of the LGBTQ advocacy group “One Iowa” has died. Sharon Malheiro co-founded “One Iowa” in 2005 and helped pave the way for same-sex marriage in Iowa. She was 67.
A bill which would make major changes to the Iowa caucuses is advancing in the state legislature. This comes after Democrats lost their first-in-the nation status in the presidential nominating process in February 2024. The bill requires people to be physically present to participate in a caucus. They would also have to register with their party 70 days before a caucus. The Iowa Caucuses will be a crucial test for Republican candidates seeking the presidential nomination in 2024.
