The Archbishop of Dubuque says he’s immediately retiring because of health reasons. Archbishop Michael Jackels has served for almost 10 years. Pope Francis approved his request to retire. Archbishop Jackels says he’s stepping aside for health reasons. The Pope also appointed retired Des Moines Bishop Richard Pates to serve until a new Archbishop is named.

Governor Reynolds signed a bill into law reorganizing state government. It reduces the number of state agencies from 37 to 16. The Governor says the measure makes government more efficient and saves the state millions of dollars.

A bill is moving forward that makes it harder for some people to get food stamps, known officially as SNAP benefits. The bill would create an ”assets test” and would consider things like property and financial savings to decide who’s eligible. Supporters say this would cut down on fraud and make sure only people who need this assistance can get it. The measure also limits what people can buy with SNAP, including a ban on candy and pop, unless it’s diet soda.

A man hurt in an explosion at a manufacturing plant in Marengo want the company, C6-Zero, to pay up. The plant exploded in December last year, creating this massive fire that injured at least nine people. Kelly Regenold and his wife filed a lawsuit against the company late last month. The suit claims he was working for a contractor inside C6 Zero the day of the explosion. He had burns over 30 percent of his body and was in the hospital for a month. The suit claims C6 Zero didn’t provide the right safety protections and failed to maintain its equipment. C6 Zero has not filed a response to the lawsuit.

Governor Reynolds issued disaster proclamations for six more counties following storms on Friday. State funding is now available for recovery in Appanoose, Davis, Iowa, Jackson, Lucas, and Monroe counties. That’s on top of the 12 counties… including Cedar, Delaware, Dubuque, Grundy, Johnson, Keokuk, Linn and Washington… that received the proclamations the day after the storm.
