Trump Then, Trump Now
Much is being made about the Donald Trump presidential candidacy and whether it’s a good idea for the Republican Party, for the country, or even for Trump.
So far, much of the conversation has to do with personalities, guessing about voter inclination, and whose time or turn it is.
But one analyst offered a unique opinion…one that was unique because it actually had to do with substance.
The person noted that Trump in 2016 spent his time on the stump talking about the American people…but that Trump leading up to 2024 is spending his time talking about Trump—his grievances about the 2020 election, the attempts by the Deep State and rogue prosecutors to make investigations political in nature, etc.
This is not to say he’s wrong about any of it…but that it is in contrast to when he first came down the golden escalator in 2015.
Granted, that was then and this is now…Trump is no longer a total outsider, since he served a term in office…Trump has a track record upon which to run, saying he accomplished things then and can do it again…the world is different post-COVID, and different after Joe Biden’s term.
So in that respect, simply recycling the 2016 talking points would make no sense eight years later…but it is an interesting and valid point, that Trump 1.0 was focused on the people.
If Trump 3.0, the current version, deviates from that…it could lead to an erosion in the coalition that got him to the White House to begin with.
