Voters overwhelmingly rejected a proposed municipal water system in Swisher. The new water system would have cost 20-million dollars.
72-percent of registered voters in Swisher voted…and 84-percent of them voted “no.”
People voted to approve the Solon Community School district’s 25-million dollar bond. The district wants to upgrade its athletic facilities and add classroom space at the intermediate building.
Benton Community School District’s 48.5-million dollar bond failed.
The money would have gone towards a new elementary school in Van Horne, and help renovate the current elementary, middle, and high school buildings.
Voters approved a 35-million dollar bond for Hawkeye Community College. The school is looking to build a new law enforcement training center, a new STEM learning center, and support career training programs for fields like construction, HVAC, and plumbing.
A 9.2-million dollar bond for Midland Community Schools passed.
Voters approved a 10.6-million dollar bond for Iowa Valley Community School District with 73 percent voting yes.
The Waterloo City Council has a new member. Belinda Creighton-Smith won the special election for Ward Four, receiving 74 percent of the votes.
Six people escaped a house fire overnight Tuesday in Cedar Rapids. Firefighters responded to the 3600 block of Spruce Wood Court around 2 in the morning. Crews found two adults and four children had made it out safely. There is major damage to the house. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The “No Shave” months for Cedar Rapids police have come to a close. The department raised more than 16-thousand-500 dollars. The Cedar Rapids Police Protective charity will use much of the money for youth programs in the city.
The Sporting News named Iowa Hawkeye basketball junior Kris Murray as a third team All-American. Murray is also a semifinalist for the Wooden National Award and the Oscar Robertson national player of the year honor. The Cedar Rapids native is averaging a team best 20.5 points and eight rebounds per game. Murray and the Hawkeyes will return to the court tomorrow in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.
