CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – More people have been hurt by gunfire in Cedar Rapids so far this year than in the last two years by the end of February. That’s according to data TV-9 received from CRPD highlighting incidents so far this year, compared to a similar timeline in previous years. President of the Iowa Firearms Coalition, Dave Funk, looks at shots-fired data and advocates for change. He says if more people without records had guns, they could better protect themselves. That’s why the IFC supports second amendment rights and law enforcement. So far in 2023, Cedar Rapids police have reported 14 shots-fired incidents. 5 of those resulted in injuries and 3 in death.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Dubuque Community Schools have settled a lawsuit claiming the district’s negligence led to a student’s sexual assault. The lawsuit was filed in 2021 and claims that a female student was repeatedly bullied by a male student, and school officials were notified. It says the district failed to prevent further contact between the students and the female student was later sexually assaulted on campus. School board members unanimously approved the settlement. The student’s family will now receive $125,000 through the settlement, but the agreement states this is not an admission or concession from the district that those claims are correct.

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KCRG) – On Wednesday, February 22nd, Independence Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the Comfort Inn and Suites on Swan Lake Boulevard. According to police, hotel staff reported that a female occupant approached the counter appearing injured and in distress. Staff then say a male occupant, later identified as 42-year-old Matthew David Milligan, took the female back to their hotel room against her will. Law enforcement arrived and could hear the female inside the room in distress. Police breached the room and detained Milligan. He was charged with Kidnapping–1st Degree, Domestic Abuse Assault–Strangulation, Violation of No Contact Order, Disorderly Conduct, and Unlawful Use of License. The female victim was transferred to a medical facility for treatment of her injuries.
