From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:

The holiday travel mess is getting better. Yesterday and today, few delays were reported at the Eastern Iowa Airport. There were still some stranded holiday travelers trying to reach their destinations. Iowa State student Declan Cole’s trip back home to California for Christmas got delayed until Monday. He was not alone. The flight tracking web site Flight Aware reported more than 38-hundred cancellations yesterday and 75-hundred delays.

Around 20 people are in temporary housing after a catastrophic water pipe break at a Manchester apartment complex. Police responded to the Manchester Park Apartment Buildings at 9 yesterday morning. They say the pipe break, which impacted two buildings, soaked the carpets and walls, and even led to some collapsed ceilings. Delaware Emergency Management and Delaware County Community Services worked together to make sure the tenants have temporary housing and food.

Private plow crews were busier than usual during the pre-Christmas blizzard and Monday’s snow. The problem was the wind, with crews finding themselves back at the same lots and driveways more than once due to blowing and drifting snow. Crews at Country Club Lawn Care and Landscaping in Marion say their crew of 30 came in at midnight and tried to get things cleared off by morning, but during this storm, Mother Nature was not on their side.

Des Moines Police shot and killed a 16-year-old they say pointed a gun at them. The shooting happened on the city’s south side around 12:30 Monday morning, during a call for a domestic dispute. Investigators say the 16-year-old boy was armed, while other members of his family were in the apartment. Police say he pointed the gun at officers and refused to drop his weapon, prompting officers to shoot him. He died at the hospital. Investigators have not released the name of the teenager killed nor the officers involved.

And gas prices may be leveling off. While the Triple-A says the national average fell four cents in the last week, Iowa’s average remained about the same at $2.86 a gallon, up a penny from a week ago.
