IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa City Public Safety says the city’s decorative sleigh that usually sits downtown has been stolen. In a tweet, officials said the sleigh, which is displayed annually in the Pedestrian Mall, was taken sometime between 11:56 p.m. Friday and 1:15 a.m. Saturday. City officials and police are asking for the sleigh to be returned, and that residents keep an eye out for it. If the sleigh is spotted, contact police at 319-356-5276.

VAN METER, Iowa (WOI) – A group of parents in the central Iowa town of Van Meter have started a petition asking the district to get rid of curriculum that introduces LGBTQ topics in classrooms. The petition arose after a book detailing a transgender student’s journey was on a list that was presented to the class. Complaints also cite the learning curriculum as politically left-leaning. New Iowa code allows parents to address concerns over methods of teaching with the School Board. Van Meter Superintendent Deron Durflinger said teachers are just doing their best to provide students with what they need. Officials from the organization ‘Iowa Safe Schools’ said parents can request their child be exempt from certain content, but it doesn’t have to be taken away from everyone. The district said they are listening to concerns and updating policies as needed.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – Parking at downtown Dubuque meters, ramps and lots will be free from Thursday through Sunday, during the holiday weekend. In a press release, city leaders said the free parking is meant to encourage people to get out and shop local for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday – two important sales days for local businesses. The free parking weekend also comes as city leaders are looking for input for their new smart parking and mobility plan, “Move DBQ.” Input from residents will be used to help improve parking access, efficiency and user experience.
