Off the Grid

Do you ever feel like you have had enough of people and just want to get away from the world? Happens to me a fair amount. Well, if so…you are in the right place.

That’s because Iowa is the best state in the nation in which to live off the grid.

LawnStarter came up with a ranking of 2023’s “Best States to Live Off the Grid”…as they note, to live off the land, drink rainwater, read by candlelight, and so on.

They compared the 50 states on 23 key factors, such as cost of farmland, legality of self-generated utilities, and availability of renewable energy. They also took into account climate and access to rural hospitals.

Iowa is first in the nation overall.  Iowa is also first for suitability of electric, water and waste laws for off-grid living. We are second in the country for the number of critical-access hospitals. We’re eighth in the nation in terms of cost of living index, and we’re 18th in terms of “yearly average number of very hot days”.

But in what seems counter to all this communing with nature…we are also first in the nation for phone coverage. Which I guess means that when you go to get away from it all…you’ll still be able post photos of your off-the-grid experience.
