One Issue Or More

There are a variety of reasons why you cast your vote for one candidate or another. For some folks, one single issue is so important, it almost doesn’t matter how the candidate feels about every other issue…so long as the candidate is “right” on the one issue, that’s all that matters.

I respect the devotion to a single issue. But I respectfully suggest it may be short-sighted.

No, this is not some sort of “sacrifice for the common good” speech, far from it. It’s more of a caution that if a candidate is so out of step with your views on every issue but one…what do you have left if the candidate flips on that issue, or does not deliver as you hoped?

It occurs to me that some folks are so driven by a single issue—again, I have respect for that—but they have no idea where the candidate stands on virtually any other issue. What if the candidate in question is “right” on the one issue, but very “wrong” on the next three issues you find important. Do those three outweigh the one?

By the way, the same thing goes for party identification…just because they have a certain letter by their name is far from a guarantee about positions, stands, or beliefs. Is it a good baseline barometer? Perhaps…but again, that’s thin information upon which to base such an important decision.

Informed voting—nothing like it. But that’s *fully* informed.
