CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson was admitted to UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital on Sunday evening. In a brief statement, Hinson’s Chief of Staff Jimmy Peacock said she is being treated for a kidney infection. “She is looking forward to being back on the road soon,” Peacock wrote in the statement. “She appreciates all of the prayers and well wishes.” Monday afternoon, the Chief of Staff followed up with another statement: “Congresswoman Hinson is feeling better, but still undergoing treatment for a kidney infection at UnityPoint St. Luke’s Hospital, and will remain there overnight. She sincerely appreciates everyone who has reached out, and is grateful for the incredible doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s Hospital who have provided phenomenal care. We will continue to provide updates.” A planned debate between Hinson and her Democrat challenger, Liz Mathis, scheduled for Tuesday has been cancelled.

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (KCRG) – Early Monday morning, a break-in occurred at Columbus High School that left extensive vandalism in 6 classrooms and 3 other common and office areas. The damage included several broken windows, one entrance area, trophy cases, network cables, and other items scattered around the rooms. According to the school district, a student is in custody in relation to the incident. The school district confirmed Monday evening that they will be back in session on Tuesday, October 18th, 2022.

MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – On Monday, a former volunteer Linn County reserve deputy sheriff pled guilty to receiving child pornography. 51-year-old Gordon Grabau admitted in court that between December 2014 and June 2021 he knowingly received and attempted to receive images of minors engaged in sexual conduct. On July 1st, 2021, officers seized his home and found devices containing over 160,000 files containing child pornography and included material involving children as young as infants and toddlers. He was suspended from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and later resigned on July 17th, 2021. Grabau was convicted of one count of receiving child pornography. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – It may only be October, but organizers with the Iowa State Fair are already talking about next summer. In a Facebook post, organizers announced the theme for the 2023 Iowa State Fair will be “Best Days Ever.” This year’s theme of “Find Your Fun” brought record-breaking numbers to the fair, which included setting a new single day record for attendance at more than 128,000 people. The 2023 Iowa State Fair is set for Aug. 10-20.
