More Numbers
We shared with you yesterday some numbers from the most recent Emerson College poll of 959 Iowans, conducted between October 2nd and 4th. It’s a good survey, of “very likely voters” and with a margin of error of only plus-or-minus 3.1 points. We talked about the races for Governor and U.S. Senate in Iowa; if you missed it, go to kxel.com.
Today, numbers on issues and national races. A majority of Iowans, 56 percent, disapprove of the job President Biden is doing…only 34 percent, barely a third, approve. Looking ahead to 2024, 47 percent said they’d support former President Trump in a rematch with President Biden…by contrast, 39 percent would support Biden; this in a state that went for Trump in both 2016 and 2020.
Here’s something interesting…38 percent say the FBI search on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home makes no difference on whether they’d support him…but another 34 percent says the raid makes them *more* likely to support #45 in his attempt to become #47.
More importantly, though, are issues. By far, the economy is the most important issue for these Iowa voters; 45 percent of those surveyed said that, far outpacing other choices such as threats to democracy at 17 percent, abortion access at 12 percent, and health care and immigration, each of which was the most important issue for 7 percent of those Iowans surveyed.
Speaking of the abortion issue, 48 percent say the overturning of Roe v. Wade makes no difference on their likelihood to vote…but a total of 49 percent say the decision will make them much more or somewhat more likely to vote due to the Dobbs decision.
Numbers are fine; of course, the only numbers that will count are those votes cast on or before November 8.
