Candidate Cattle Call

For well more than a century, the National Cattle Congress Fair has been held at the fairgrounds in Waterloo. For the better part of a decade, the KXEL Celebrity Cow Milking Contest has been a part of the event—this year will be no different, and we hope you’ll join us a week from tomorrow, on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m., to see elected officials, radio and TV personalities, folks from the university and business communities, and so on try to milk a cow. If you have attended and think it’s easy…think again.

This year, though, something new…a chance to hear directly from folks who will be on the November general election ballot. Jim Koch of the Cattle Congress came up with the idea, and we were happy to buy in. After all, the cow milking contest was his idea, too.

We’re calling it the KXEL Candidate Cattle Call…we’ll have a booth with the other vendors and performers inside Estel Hall from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the Cattle Congress Fair…we’ve invited candidates from state, federal, and local races to join me for conversation that we’ll stream on Facebook Live, record for broadcast on KXEL…and, of course, have in front of any of you who want to join us.

We see it as a great way for the folks on the ballot to make their case in front of you—in person and over the air—and for them to connect with one of the truly great events Iowa has to offer.

We’ll have more on this in coming days, but for now…better clear your schedule. Cow milking contest on Thursday morning next week, candidate call next week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, at the National Cattle Congress Fair in Waterloo.

Oh, and I think they still serve oodles and oodles of chicken and noodles, too.
