The Year Was 1956–on the pop music charts, Elvis Presley burst on the scene with a number of hits, including the year’s #1 “Heartbreak Hotel”…Doris Day sang the popular “Que Sera, Sera”…and Perry Como scored with the novelty song “Hot Diggity”…in the news, boxing legend Rocky Marciano retired as the undefeated world champion (he would die in a plane crash in Iowa just more than a decade later), actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco, and Don Larsen of the New York Yankees pitched the first (and to date, only) perfect game in the World Series…TV programs premiering included soap operas “As the World Turns” and “The Edge of Night” as well as the original version of “The Price Is Right” with host Bill Cullen…and on the big screen, “The King & I” and “High Society” entertained moviegoers.
