IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa City police have arrested two people in connection to a robbery and shots fired incident on Tuesday. Police said they arrested Joey Smith, Jr., 31, and Marcia Smith Buckhalter, 29, both of Iowa City. Officers said they were called to Shamrock Place at about 5:14 p.m. for a report of a robbery and gunshots. Smith is facing charges of first degree robbery, going armed with intent, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and control of a firearm by a felon. Smith Buckhalter is facing a charge of first degree robbery. The incident remains under investigation. WAPELLO COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – On June 6th at approximately 10:41 am, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office reported to a report from a concerned citizen that he found a recently burnt vehicle in the 12200 block of Sycamore Road. Deputies responded to the scene and identified the vehicle as a Ford Mustang. Members of the Ottumwa Police Department identified hidden VIN numbers on the burnt vehicle and confirmed the vehicle was reported to have been stolen during the overnight hours. Officials conducted a joint investigation and identified 25-year-old Wesley Aaron Rupp from Ottumwa as a suspect. He was also identified as a suspect in a separate burglary from an automobile and fraud case as well. Rupp was arrested and charged with Arson in the 2nd Degree, Theft in the 2nd Degree, Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Theft in the Third Degree, and seven counts of Unauthorized Use of Credit Cards.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) -A camp that helps kids after a disaster is coming to Cedar Rapids. Camp Noah will run from August 8th to the 12th at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The camp first came to Cedar Rapids after the 2008 flood, but this time it’s dealing with kids suffering from anxiety or depression from the August 2020 derecho. They will have activities to help children process their fears and feelings, develop resiliency, and coping skills. Organizers wanted to hold the camp immediately after the derecho, but put it on pause because of Covid. Church leaders say it’s still needed. “Our community went through so much with the derecho,” said Trish Decker, Pastor with Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. “And I think we all know that even now when storms come up, people talk about how they’re nervous or anxious, and if adults are dealing with that, we know our kids are too.” The free camp is being paid for by Lutheran Services of Iowa.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – In March 2020, law enforcement received a tip alerting them to an email address that had uploaded suspected child pornography. Detectives obtained and executed a search warrant at 70-year-old Kevin Emmett Toomey’s place of residence and seized several electronic devices. The devices revealed over 4,000 images and nearly 300 videos depicting child porn. Investigators say Toomey began accessing child pornography shortly after his release from prison for a previous federal charge. Toomey was sentenced to 180 months in prison and must serve 10 years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
