The Next Eighty Years
Yesterday we marked a bit of a milestone…this radio station first came on the air 80 years ago yesterday, July 14, 1942.
We talked about it on the air a bit and had some fun with some vintage audio jingles and the like. And we noted that it was “KXEL Day” in Iowa, thanks to a proclamation signed by the governor; the mayors of both Cedar Rapids and Waterloo signed similar proclamations for their respective cities, and we’re appreciative of their support.
I must say, I’m more appreciative of the emails, texts, tweets, and other contact many of you in the audience sent to mark the day. Some thanked us for enhancing our local programming, for the types of interviews that we do, for letting you submit questions that we use in our conversations with elected officials and the like.
One of you was kind enough to note that you listened to KXEL some 65 years ago while serving in the U.S. Navy in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
Whether you listen in the Mediterranean, or on the banks of the Cedar River…near our flamethrower of a transmitter in Dysart in northern Tama County or our main studios in downtown Waterloo…on AM 1540 or in the Cedar Valley at FM 100.5…or with the free KXEL app or streaming live at kxel.com—every bit of input you send is read, shared and appreciated. And yes, even when you suggest we’re not as good as we think we are.
So since we cannot possibly say it often enough, thank you for being a part of the KXEL audience. And don’t forget, we’re looking forward to seeing you in person at our community picnic, one week from tomorrow…go to kxel.com for details.
