Civil Disagreement
If ever there was a time for civil conversation and respectful disagreement in our society…it’s right now.
I have literally zero confidence about it happening, but thought I’d at least try.
The January 6th commission continues, with polls showing that no minds are being changed, and each opposite side is merely digging its respective heels in deeper. The U.S. Supreme Court may issue groundbreaking decisions now through tomorrow on topics ranging from public prayer to sanctity of life…decisions that could lead to violent reactions across the country.
Decades-long friendships are being ruined by such disagreements. Business relationships are changing and we take sides, seemingly on everything.
Don’t bother with the nuance of a piece of legislation, instead jump to conclusions based on what you think is a vote on the ultimate issue. Don’t bother to read a court’s ruling, just jump to the final paragraph and make assumptions. Take a public stand based on who is in power, rather than the merits of the issue.
I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know, and experience on a daily basis. But what if everyone—everyone—just took the proverbial deep breath and calmed down for a second, instead of instantaneously overreacting. What a difference it would make.
Won’t happen. But worth shooting for, and considering.
