Watch Those Pumps
I recall being in high school, a bit more than 40 years ago, when a change was made to gas pumps.
Back then, gas was never thought to reach a dollar a gallon, so the pump only was configured to handle the unheard-of price of 99.9 cents per gallon.
When the $1 level was breached, for a time until new pump mechanisms were in place you would buy gas at a pump that figured it at a price per half gallon…in other words, it looked cheap, but you were only getting half as much.
I didn’t pay attention to that change, to the delight of friends in my car when I learned that the tab was going to be twice what I had thought by looking at the pump. They still owe me gas money for that trip to the State Fair.
Now comes word that in some states, pumps are again being reconfigured…but to presume a per-gallon price of at least $10.
For those of us shocked at paying more than $4, that may seem unusual…but in some states, like California, the price regularly tops $6 and $7 per gallon…so not that far-fetched.
Talk about giving you a real idea of what producers expect…just watch how quickly those $10 pumps are installed across the country.
