A Trip to the Store

I make it a practice to buy things in person at brick-and-mortar stores, because of how important they are to our communities. There are times that I do order online, typically because the item is not available in the store.

My efforts at totallyiowa.com include producing and shipping DVDs, meaning at times I have to order blank DVDs and plastic cases. Those are no longer stocked at the Waterloo Staples store, so I order them online and then go to the store to pick them up. That way I can check to make sure cases are not broken, and I also get a chance to pick up other things that I may see.

As per custom, I got an email yesterday telling me that my order was ready for pick up. However, there were rules. I had to show up in person, or else designate a specific individual who would pick the order up. I also had to print off the email, because there was a bar code in it for inventory scanning. And I had to bring with me a valid photo ID.

None of that seemed out of line, it’s the same process they’ve used for quite a while. So I went to the store, handed them the email, showed them my ID, and got my order.

I mention that because in order to pick up an order of office supplies, I had to show a photo ID…yet there are many who find that requirement to be too much to ask before a person casts a ballot in an election.

Which is ultimately more valuable to our republic…voting, or office supplies? I’m just fine with showing a photo ID for both.
