X Marks the Spot
Next Monday, a change in procedures for U.S. passports. No longer will applicants be limited to listing “male” or “female” when asked for their gender…now you can choose “X” instead.
Literally…under gender, you can list “X”. The secretary of state, whose office handles such things, says adding a third gender marker is to benefit, in their words, “non-binary, intersex, and gender non–conforming individuals”.
They further patted themselves on the back—I think it’s still OK to say that—for defining “X” as “unspecified or another gender identity” beyond male or female. They said in a news release, “This definition is respectful of individuals’ privacy while advancing inclusion.”
You need submit no medical documentation, even if the gender you select on your passport is different from your other citizenship or identity documents.
I’m not going to wade into the fight on this, other than to wonder if, in fact, the U.S. government is actually harming the very people they wokely claim to be helping.
The purpose of a passport is, primarily, for international travel. By identifying yourself as “X”—neither male nor female—might our government be allowing countries which are not as woke as we are on the subject, to target “X” individuals for possible harm? In other words, there are nations in the world which persecute and harm those who are gay and lesbian, for example. Imagine how much worse it might be for “X” designees.
As with so much of wokeness, it claims to be helpful to a certain class of individuals, but often leads to adverse unintended consequences which cause far more harm than any “feel good” benefit.
Instead of “X” marking the spot…the “X” may be a target on the backs of some Americans.
