Simple Disagreement
Racism is wrong, plain and simple. Discrimination based on race—frankly, either direction—is also wrong.
But it seems when some folks don’t have a good argument to use, they resort to simply labeling an opposing speaker as racist. It’s ridiculous, and it also leads to the continued lack of intelligent discourse in our society.
Let’s be very clear—you can be against putting Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on the U.S. Supreme Court for reasons that have nothing to do with her gender or her race. You could believe that her generally broad interpretation of the Constitution is not appropriate. You could believe that her failure to abide by sentencing guidelines put into law by Congress is a disqualifier. You could believe that her failure to properly answer some questions is a problem.
You can disagree with her for very valid reasons, unrelated to characteristics of birth. But these days, you’ll be attacked from the left and labeled a racist.
Keep in mind, this candidate was nominated precisely because of those characteristics of birth. This is not to say she might not be tremendously qualified, but the quota system for this pick imposed by the president focused on gender and race, period.
Interesting that those on the left hurl the racist charge against those who are against the nominee…because to them, they agree that her gender and race are her key qualifications, so they cannot imagine a conversation—much less a dispute—about beliefs and issues.
Are some opposed to the judge opposed precisely because of race and gender? Perhaps…but far more are in favor of her solely for those reasons, and that would be against the law if I used those same conditions if hiring an employee.
