Not Just Today
Today is National Ag Day, an event organized by the Agriculture Council of America, a nonprofit group which aims to increase public awareness of agriculture’s role in modern society.
It’s a shame that the country has to have a dedicated day for this…since without agribusiness, everyone goes hungry.
No more true than here in Iowa, with the best farm ground on the planet, and the producers who know how to make the most of every inch of that ground. Iowa feeds the world, quite literally…despite governmental interference, weather ranging from floods to droughts to derechos, and a work schedule during planting and harvesting that makes me tired just to think about it.
For whatever reason, those organizing the day have decided on “Growing A Climate for Tomorrow” as the theme…to me, buying into the “climate change” narrative, fully embraced by the official USDA statement on Ag Day.
But if you want to limit the conversation to acknowledging the fact that our farmers care more about the health of our soil and water supply…and are doing more about it on a daily basis…than those activists loudly complaining about the situation…then I’m all in.
I don’t have a farm background, but I have consistently admired the work ethic, performance, and resiliency of Iowa’s farmers.
And above all, I love to eat.
So at the very least today, thank a farmer for engaging in a way of life so many of us would not dream of taking on. And while we’re at it, don’t limit that show of thanks just to a single day in March.
