This Will Never Happen

It’s now official, Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring from the U.S. Supreme Court, and President Biden can fulfill a campaign promise to appoint a black woman to the court. More on that part alone Monday.

It’s no secret that Kamala Harris has not distinguished herself as vice-president. So let’s play out a fantasy that some folks on each side of the spectrum might enjoy.

Biden nominates Harris to the court. Because as vice-president she might be casting the tie-breaking vote to literally give herself the job, she opts to resign as soon as her successor as vice-president is approved. Biden then selects Pete Buttigieg as vice-president; sure, he’s a white male, but he’s a gay white male and that would be another “looks like America” choice he likes so much.

Harris then goes through the Senate hearing process, does poorly, and the Democrats can’t even get their full 50-vote caucus to approve her. Her nomination fails, and she goes back to California to look for work.

Biden leaves office due to health reasons, Buttigieg becomes president, and he then selects someone else who “looks like America” to be vice-president and run with him in 2024.

You might ask, why not Hillary Clinton as vice-president so she can become president. Nope. Too obvious.

None of any of this will happen, of course. But it’s just as good a theory as anything else out there.
