Always On His Mind

For someone who says he doesn’t think about his predecessor…President Biden sure seems to reference him a lot.

You may recall that in the 50 weeks of the Biden Presidency, he’s been asked at times about now-former President Trump. Often it’s to compare something that was done in the Trump years with current policy. Biden has consistently dismissed any such question, saying “I don’t think about him very much” or something similar.

Yet at the same time, when there’s blame to be placed, this president has no problem talking about “my predecessor”. And during yesterday’s politically-motivated speech ostensibly to mark the one year anniversary of the disturbance at the Capitol, President Biden placed all the blame squarely on the shoulders of his predecessor by name, doing everything but calling him a “poor sport”.

There is no question that Trump is always on the minds of Biden and his fellow Democrats in Washington…and in Iowa, for that matter, judging by the flurry of sanctimonious news releases that came from the state party and every candidate yesterday.

Makes sense, since they had only one goal in mind in the 2020 election–beat Trump. No real strategy for how to govern once that was accomplished, not enough in common really to come up with legislative plans…as I’ve said before, it’s sort of like the dog who chases cars, and then doesn’t know what to do when he catches one.

Granted, last month this president did praise the former president by name when it came to developing a COVID vaccine, after steadfastly rejecting such comment for the previous year. An accurate and appropriate gesture, even if months late.

But beyond that, it’s all Trump all the time for Democrats and the formerly-mainstream media sources they rely upon. He’s in their heads, because he’s still the key force that can motivate political change that puts them on the sidelines. Don’t look for the mindset to change any time soon.
